Can Nicotine Pouches Cause Gum Disease?
Table of Contents
Nicotine Pouches are fast becoming a very popular option amongst consumers when it comes to using alternative Nicotine products (ANP) and for good reason too. They’re subtle, discreet, available in a wide range of flavours & nicotine strengths and are ideal for someone who is wanting to quit cigarettes but still get their nicotine fix. But is there a risk of gum disease with using them?
As with anything related to Nicotine, there’s a lot of shadow and uncertainty lurking around it with people questioning the health risks involved with using these products, especially with Nicotine Pouches being so new on to the market that there hasn’t been any form of “long term” research conducted on them.
In this blog, I’m going to take at all alternative nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes, snus and of course Nicotine Pouches and see if there’s an answer to the question in topic of this blog. Let’s get into it!
Let’s Talk About Nicotine
Might as well get this blog started with the primary reason I’ve written this blog, and that’s discussing Nicotine!
Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical, which is added in to cigarettes and can cause people to become addicted to it as well as becoming some what “dependent” on it. Overcoming nicotine addiction is one of the hardest things a person can opt to do in their life, but the rewards at the end of succeeding to quit nicotine, or at least start to taper their intake down are plentiful and makes the choice to want to quit a relatively easy one to make I think.
The common misconception by people when it comes to Nicotine in cigarettes is that it is one of the “cancer causing” chemicals that seem to be plentiful in cigarettes, and it is harmful to a persons health if they consume it, but this isn’t quite right. There has been no scientific proven evidence to show that Nicotine is harmful, or that it can cause cancer, due to the fact…Nicotine is not harmful.
Reputable sources have even come forward to say a similar statement, with Cancer Research backing the use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy options to help them quit smoking, and if Nicotine really was harmful, would GP’s really be prescribing things like Nicotine Patches to people who are wanting to quit smoking?
Whilst it isn’t cancer causing or seriously dangerous to a person’s health, it can lead to some problems depending on what is being used to deliver the nicotine into the bloodstream, let’s take a look at this in more detail.
Cigarettes
You may already know, or would have guessed based on the above facts about smoking, but Cigarettes are bad for you. End of.
A lit cigarette is estimated to contain over 5000 different chemicals that are primarily housed in the smoke that is emitted from a lit cigarette. And this smoke is what is ingested into the body, specifically the lungs and blood stream. There’s also at least 60 chemicals that are formed that are known to be cancer causing chemicals as well.
Smoking can seriously affect your health, and could lead to such things as heart disease, lung disease and worse case…cancer. But on top of all this, it can also cause you some issues relating to your mouth as well, most notably your teeth and gums.
Nicotine from a cigarette can cause some serious discolouration to your teeth as it will react with the other chemicals and stick to your teeth causing the discolouration. Gum disease is also quite common amongst smokers, as the sheer amount of carcinogens and harmful chemicals that are present and will be ingested into your body when you smoke a cigarette will soon build up leading to potential problems. Nicotine not being one of these harmful chemicals don’t forget!
Vaping
Vaping is notably less harmful to a person than what smoking is, well 95% safer according to Public Health England! Using an E-Cigarette creates the sensation of smoking an actual cigarette and delivers nicotine into the body, just without the thousands of harmful chemicals and toxins that are found in cigarettes.
However, Vaping can also cause some problems relating to Gums, due to the fact that vape juice can contain some sweeteners and additives that can prove conducive to things like plaque and tartar formation. And with your teeth being connected to your gums, these problems won’t have far to travel to then start affecting your gums.
So might be worth thinking about when considering making the choice to use something like an E-Cigarette and also to be cautious when picking your flavours of what ever e-liquid you’re considering to use, try steer clear of any super sweet sounding flavours as chances are this could lead to the problems listed above.
Snus
Of course, no article about the safety of Nicotine Pouches would be complete without mentioning Snus and the risks involved with using these pouches!
Whilst Snus may look similar to Nicotine Pouches, they actually are completely different products and the risks involved with using both are completely polar opposite to one another. Snus pouches use actual moist tobacco, and is used like a Nicotine Pouch with it resting between the upper gum and lip for the Nicotine to be absorbed.
And you’ve probably guessed what the risks are involved here with using them. These pouches contain actual tobacco, and within the tobacco is carcinogens that you’re then pressing against the gum and they’re being absorbed into the body. Some brands of Snus emphasise the fact they have low carcinogens but still, they remain present, so opting to use Snus for your Nicotine fix is not the best idea!
Nicotine Pouches
Nicotine Pouches offer people a smoke free alternative to getting their Nicotine fix and arguably in the safest way possible compared to aforementioned.
There has been no direct correlation between gum disease and Nicotine Pouches. Nicotine Pouches are relatively simplistic when it comes to what is contained in each pouch. Commonly features a powdered nicotine solution, which contains nicotine obviously, as well as flavourings and mostly natural ingredients that are needed to keep the nicotine powder moist and good to use.
And as we have established, Nicotine is not harmful to you when you consume it, and choosing to use Nicotine Pouches, which is arguably the “safer” way to do so will pretty much eliminate the risk of contracting gum related disease or issues.
